Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
How long will it take to process my migration application?
This is dependent on 2 factors:
- Visa type – some visas take much longer than others due to the number of documents required to prepare the application and the client’s ability to attain these requested documents
- Processing time by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) – counts from the time the completed application is lodged to DIAC and is independent of the time spent in preparing the application. The caseload of the office concerned and the complexity of the case etc. also needs to be taken into consideration
Can I do my medical processing in Australia?
Yes. If you are in Australia temporarily you can approach Panel Doctors with forms 26 &160 to do so. However, you must not open the results and to forward this directly to the DIAC office where you lodged the application.
Do I have to send original documents with my application?
Original documents or properly certified copies are accepted, but you should not send your passport to the DIAC unless requested
Who can we include in a migration application?
Depends on the visa you apply for
Can I travel to Australia while my migration application is being processed?
You can travel to Australia for short-term if you satisfy the requirements for that visa. But bear in mind: applications lodged offshore means that the visa will be granted offshore and applications lodged onshore means that the visa will be granted onshore. Your visa application will subsequently be declined if it is an onshore one and you are overseas when the decision is made.
If I am granted a visa, do I need to travel immediately?
Every visa granted has an initial entry date. This date is calculated such that you will have enough time to prepare yourself before the move. You are allowed to enter Australia before or on the entry date given in order to activate the visa. If you fail to enter Australia by the initial entry date, you will have breached one of the visa conditions, and your visa will be cancelled. If you feel that the visa entry date is too soon, then it is possible to still purchase an air ticket for arrival before that date so that you can activate your visa. Once activated, you may enter or leave Australia anytime throughout the period of your visa.
